How to convert decimal feet to feet and inches
The arithmetic is short enough to do in your head once you have seen it. The whole number in front of the decimal point is already feet, so leave it alone. Take everything after the point and multiply by 12, because there are twelve inches in a foot. That product is your inches.
5.75 ft → 5 ft, and 0.75 × 12 = 9 → 5 ft 9 in
Clean examples like that one are the exception. Feed in a real measurement off a total station or a spreadsheet and the inches almost always come out with a decimal of their own. The error grows steadily and peaks just short of a full foot: 0.9 ft is 10.8 inches, but reading it as 9 inches is out by 1.8 inches. On a single stud that is an annoyance; run it across a foundation layout, a run of formwork or a set of shop drawings and it becomes rework. There is a useful sanity check that takes one second: a tenth of a foot is always slightly more than an inch and change — 1.2 in, to be exact. If your converted inches number is smaller than the tenths figure you started with, you have read the wrong scale.
The reason both systems survive is that each is better at its own job. Decimal feet add, subtract and average with plain arithmetic, which is what you want when you are chaining survey shots or computing a grade. Why the foot is exactly 0.3048 metres — and why surveyors had a second one
The international foot has been defined as exactly 0.3048 metres since the 1959 agreement between the national standards bodies of the English-speaking countries, which set the yard at exactly 0.9144 m. That makes one inch exactly 25.4 mm, with no rounding anywhere in the chain — the millimetre column in the table above is exact, not approximate.
There is a wrinkle that matters if you work with older survey data. The United States kept a second, very slightly longer U.S. survey foot for land surveying, defined as 1200/3937 metres. The difference is about two parts per million — invisible over a room, but roughly two feet across a state plane coordinate grid, which is more than enough to misplace a property corner.
