How many coins are in a dollar?

Six answers, one for each circulating coin: 100 pennies, 20 nickels, 10 dimes, 4 quarters, 2 half dollars, or 1 dollar coin. Every other conversion follows from those. Converting pennies to dollars means dividing by 100 — which is really just moving the decimal point, since a penny is one hundredth of a dollar. Converting dimes to dollars means dividing by 10. Going from dollars to cents is the same move in reverse: multiply by 100.

The counter above does all of this in whole cents rather than decimal dollars, and that is not fussiness. Computers store 0.1 and 0.25 as binary fractions that do not land exactly on the decimal value, so adding up decimal money drifts: sum 0.1 forty-three times in a browser and you get 4.300000000000001, not 4.30. Counting in cents and dividing by 100 once, at the moment of display, is the only way a change counter gives the same answer as a bank.

Coin roll calculator — what a standard roll holds

Rolls are where most people's mental arithmetic falls over, because the counts are not uniform. The U.S. Mint's own coin glossary defines a roll denomination by denomination:

Read down the "coins per roll" column and the logic appears: the counts were chosen so the face value comes out round, not the coin count. Fifty quarters would be $12.50, so quarters go 40 to a roll for a clean $10. Fifty nickels would be $2.50, so nickels go 40 for $2.00. Pennies and dimes take 50 because that already gives $0.50 and $5.00. Half dollars and dollar coins take 20.

A curiosity worth noticing in the weight column: a roll of quarters and a roll of half dollars weigh exactly the same, 226.8 g, because a half dollar is precisely twice the mass of a quarter and there are half as many in the roll. The Mint's weights are deliberately proportional to face value across the clad coins — a dime is exactly two fifths of a quarter, which is why a pound of dimes and a pound of quarters are both worth about $20.

Why banks want your change rolled

A rolled coin is a coin somebody has already counted. That is the entire reason. Rolls are the unit tellers order, store and hand out in — a bank box is 50 rolls, which is $500 in quarters or $25 in pennies — and a wrapper with your name on it makes you accountable for the count inside it, so it can be accepted without being recounted.

Loose coin has to be machine-counted, which costs the branch time and, at many banks, costs you a fee or a percentage. It is also heavy: the practical limit on a deposit is rarely the value, it is that $500 in quarters weighs 11.3 kilograms. A jar you can barely lift is usually $60 to $80 of mixed change, not the small fortune it feels like.

Counting coins by weight

Weighing is the fastest honest way to count a single denomination, because the Mint holds the specifications tightly. These are the current figures:

The nickel is the easy one: at exactly 5.000 grams it is the only circulating coin with a whole number of grams, so a kilogram of nickels is exactly 200 coins and exactly $10.00. Quarters at 5.670 g are nearly as convenient — 1,000 g is 176 coins, $44.00.

Two warnings. First, the widely repeated "a pound of quarters is $20" is a rounding, not an identity: 80 quarters weigh 453.600 g and a pound is 453.59237 g, so a scale reading exactly one pound holds 79 quarters and a bit. Close enough for a jar, wrong for an audit. Second, and more important: weight cannot resolve mixed change. A dime is 2.268 g and a penny 2.500 g. Any given total weight has many possible compositions, so there is no arithmetic that recovers the answer. Sort the pile, then weigh each denomination separately.

What the coins are made of

Since 1965 the dime, quarter and half dollar have been clad coins: two outer layers of 75% copper and 25% nickel metallurgically bonded to a pure copper core. Look at the edge of a quarter and the copper core shows as a brown stripe. Averaged through, each works out at 8.33% nickel and 91.67% copper. The nickel is the exception — no layers at all, just a uniform 25% nickel, 75% copper alloy, which is why its edge is plain while the dime carries 118 reeds, the quarter 119 and the half dollar 150.

The dollar coin is different again: 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese and 2% nickel, giving it the golden colour, with a lettered edge instead of reeds.

The 1982 penny, and the end of the penny

The cent has changed underneath people's fingers. Federal law still specifies a one-cent coin of 95% copper and 5% zinc weighing 3.11 grams — but the same statute, 31 U.S.C. § 5112, lets the Secretary of the Treasury change the cent's weight and alloy whenever it is needed to keep an adequate supply. Rising copper prices forced exactly that in 1982: the cent became copper-plated zinc, and today's coin is 97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper, weighing 2.500 g.

So a pre-1982 cent weighs 3.11 g and a modern one 2.50 g — a 20% difference you can feel in a stack of ten, and the reason a jar of old pennies weighs noticeably more than a jar of new ones. 1982 itself is a split year, with both compositions struck. It is not the cent's only wartime-style oddity either: in 1943 pennies were made of zinc-coated steel because copper was needed for the war, and a small number of copper ones were struck by mistake.

The story now has an ending. The U.S. Mint has suspended circulating penny production: the cost of making one had climbed from 1.42 cents to 3.69 cents, and the Mint expects to save roughly $56 million a year by stopping. In fiscal 2024 the penny was still 57% of all circulating coins the Mint produced — about 3.2 billion of a 5.61 billion total. Your pennies remain legal tender and remain spendable; there just will not be new ones from circulation. Coins last about 30 years, so they will be in jars for a long while yet.

Common mistakes

Assuming every roll holds 50. Only pennies and dimes do. Weighing mixed change and expecting a number — it cannot work, no matter the scale. Rounding as you go instead of at the end, which is how a real total quietly loses a cent per line. Tipping old coins into a counting machine without looking: quarters, dimes and half dollars dated 1964 or earlier are 90% silver, wartime nickels with a large mint mark over Monticello's dome contain silver, and all of them are worth far more than face value. And melting pennies or nickels for the metal, which is prohibited under 31 C.F.R. § 82.2(f).

For a single denomination, yes and accurately: a nickel is exactly 5.000 g, a quarter 5.670 g, a dime 2.268 g, a penny 2.500 g. For mixed change, no — a dime and a penny are only 0.232 g apart, so no total weight has a unique answer. Sort first.
Are pennies still being made, and are mine still spendable?
