Removing GST is not the same as subtracting the percentage

This is the mistake that costs shopkeepers and freelancers real money, and it happens because the arithmetic looks obvious. A customer pays ₹1,180 and the item carries 18% GST. To find the price before tax, most people take 18% off the ₹1,180:

Wrong: 1,180 − 18% = 1,180 × 0.82 = 967.60

The correct answer is ₹1,000 — ₹32.40 more. Here is why. The 18% was never calculated on ₹1,180. It was calculated on the smaller base price, and then added on. So ₹1,180 is not 100% of anything; it is 118% of the base price. To get back to 100% you divide by 1.18, you do not subtract 18% of a bigger number:

Correct: base = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100) = 1,180 ÷ 1.18 = 1,000

Check it forwards: 1,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = 180 GST, and 1,000 + 180 = 1,180. The subtraction answer fails the same check — 967.60 + 18% would only come to 1,141.77, not 1,180.

The gap grows with the square of the rate, so it gets bad quickly. Measured against the true base price, the subtraction answer is short by 0.25% at 5%, 3.24% at 18% and 16% at 40% — the shortfall is always rate² ÷ 100 percent. Every row below is computed with base = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100):

Price paid (incl. GST)RateCorrect base priceGST insideSubtracting the % (wrong)Difference
₹500 5% ₹476.19 ₹23.81 ₹475 ₹1.19
₹1,000 18% ₹847.46 ₹152.54 ₹820 ₹27.46
₹1,499 5% ₹1,427.62 ₹71.38 ₹1,424.05 ₹3.57
₹2,999 18% ₹2,541.53 ₹457.47 ₹2,459.18 ₹82.35
₹5,000 40% ₹3,571.43 ₹1,428.57 ₹3,000 ₹571.43

Base prices almost never land on a whole rupee — that is normal, and it is the reason invoices round the tax to the nearest rupee.

CGST, SGST and IGST — which one you charge

GST is one tax collected by two governments, so the invoice has to say who gets what. Which lines appear depends on one thing only: where the buyer is, not what you are selling.

  • Same state (intra-state sale). You and the buyer are in the same state or union territory. The tax is split down the middle: half as CGST for the central government, half as SGST (or UTGST) for the state.
  • Different states (inter-state sale). The buyer is in another state. You charge a single IGST line for the full amount, and the centre settles the state's share afterwards.

The buyer pays exactly the same either way. On a sale of ₹10,000 at 18%:

SalePrice before GSTTax lines on the invoiceTotal
Same state ₹10,000 CGST 9% = ₹900 + SGST 9% = ₹900 ₹11,800
Different states ₹10,000 IGST 18% = ₹1,800 ₹11,800

Getting the split wrong is a paperwork problem rather than a money problem, but it is a real one: the buyer claims input tax credit against the exact lines on your invoice, so a CGST/SGST invoice raised on an inter-state sale has to be corrected before either side can settle its return.

GST rates in force from 22 September 2025

The 56th GST Council meeting on 3 September 2025 replaced the old four-slab system (5%, 12%, 18% and 28%) with a simpler one. Most items that were at 12% moved down to 5%, and most that were at 28% moved down to 18%.

RateWhat it covers
NilEssentials — UHT milk, pre-packaged paneer, all Indian breads (roti, chapati, paratha, parotta), and individual life and health insurance policies.
5%The merit rate: everyday goods such as hair oil, soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, bicycles, namkeens and most packaged food.
18%The standard rate: most goods and services that are not on either special list, including cement and small cars, which both came down from 28%.
40%The special de-merit rate: a short list of luxury and harmful items — pan masala, tobacco products, aerated and caffeinated drinks, large cars and motorcycles above 350cc, yachts, casinos, betting and online money gaming.

One transition detail worth knowing: the Council moved most goods on 22 September 2025, but pan masala, gutkha, cigarettes, chewing tobacco such as zarda, unmanufactured tobacco and bidi were held back at their earlier rates until a later date is notified, because of outstanding compensation cess obligations.

Confirm the rate on your specific product before you invoice. Rates are set item by item against an HSN code, and this list is a guide to the structure, not a ruling on any one product. The CBIC rate finder in the sources below is the official place to look yours up.

On a same-state sale, halve the GST column to get the CGST and SGST lines — at 18% on ₹1,000, that is ₹90 each.

How to use this calculator

  • Add GST — you know what you want to earn on the sale and need the price to put on the bill. Type the amount before tax; the calculator adds the GST on top.
  • Remove GST — you have an MRP, a receipt or a quote that already includes tax, and you need the base price and the tax hidden inside it. Type the full amount you paid; the calculator divides it back out.
  • Any rate you like. The 0%, 5%, 18% and 40% buttons cover today's structure, but the rate box takes any number. Type 12 or 28 to re-check an old invoice, or type a rate that has just changed — the maths does not depend on the buttons.
  • Same state or different states. This only changes how the tax is labelled on the invoice, never the total. Pick "same state" for a local sale and "different states" when you are shipping across a state border.

The formulas are short enough to check by hand: adding GST is tax = base × rate ÷ 100, and removing it is base = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100). For a same-state sale, CGST and SGST are each exactly half of the tax.

Frequently asked questions

What is GST?

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is the single indirect tax charged on most goods and services sold in India. It replaced a stack of older taxes — VAT, service tax, excise duty and several others — in July 2017. The seller adds GST to the price, collects it from the buyer and pays it to the government, so the tax is really paid by the final customer. A registered business can claim back the GST it paid on its own purchases (input tax credit), which means the tax only lands once on the value each business actually adds.

What are the GST rates in India right now?

Since 22 September 2025 there are two main rates plus one special rate: a merit rate of 5%, a standard rate of 18%, and a special de-merit rate of 40% for a short list of luxury and harmful items. Many essentials are Nil-rated (no GST at all). This structure came from the 56th GST Council meeting on 3 September 2025, which folded the old four-slab system — 5%, 12%, 18% and 28% — into it: most 12% items moved down to 5% and most 28% items moved down to 18%. The rate on any specific product is set item by item, so check yours on the CBIC rate finder before you invoice.

How do I work backwards from a price that already includes GST?

Divide, do not subtract. The formula is base = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100). A price of ₹1,180 that includes 18% GST has a base of ₹1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000, and the GST inside it is ₹180. Taking 18% off the ₹1,180 instead gives ₹967.60, which is wrong by ₹32.40 — because the 18% was calculated on the smaller base price, not on the bigger inclusive price. Switch this calculator to "Remove GST" and it does the division for you.

What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?

They are three names for the same money, split differently depending on where the buyer is. If the seller and the buyer are in the same state, the tax is split in half: CGST goes to the central government and SGST goes to the state government. If they are in different states, the whole amount is charged as one IGST line instead, and the centre later passes the state's share on. The total the buyer pays is identical either way — ₹10,000 at 18% costs ₹11,800 whether it is billed as CGST ₹900 plus SGST ₹900 or as IGST ₹1,800.

Is GST charged on the price before or after a discount?

After the discount, as long as the discount is shown on the invoice at the time of sale. GST is charged on the transaction value — the amount the buyer actually pays — so a ₹1,000 item sold with a ₹200 discount is taxed on ₹800, not ₹1,000. A discount agreed after the sale is treated differently and usually needs a credit note before the tax can be reduced. If you are working out a sale price, use the discount calculator first and bring the discounted figure into this one.

What is a composition dealer, and why is there no GST on their bill?

The composition scheme is a simplified option for small businesses. Instead of charging GST on each sale and filing detailed returns, a composition dealer pays a small flat percentage of total turnover to the government out of its own pocket. Because the tax is never collected from the customer, a composition dealer cannot show GST as a separate line and issues a "bill of supply" rather than a tax invoice — and the customer cannot claim input tax credit on it. The flat percentage depends on the type of business, and the eligibility limits change from time to time, so confirm the current terms on the GST portal before opting in.

Why is the GST on my bill a rupee different from this calculator?

Rounding. GST works out to paise on almost every real invoice, and the tax amount on an invoice is normally rounded to the nearest rupee. Software also differs in where it rounds: some round the CGST and SGST halves separately and then add them, others round only the final total. Both are defensible and they can disagree by up to a rupee. This calculator shows the unrounded figure so you can see exactly where the difference comes from.

Does this calculator send my numbers anywhere?

No. Everything runs on your own device, inside the page you are reading. The amounts and rates you type are never uploaded, stored or logged, and once the page has loaded you can keep using it with no internet connection.
