How to convert a number to million

Converting to millions is one operation: divide by 1,000,000. Because a million is a power of ten, that division is just a move of the decimal point — six places to the left. Nothing is calculated and nothing is lost; the digits stay exactly where they were and only the point travels. So 1,234,567 becomes 1.234567 million, 45,000,000 becomes 45 million, and 500,000 becomes 0.5 million.

The reverse conversion is the mirror image: to turn millions back into a plain figure, move the point six places to the right. That makes 2.5 million into 2,500,000 and 0.75 million into 750,000. One caution on the scientific prefixes: mega means exactly 106, but computer storage is sometimes measured in binary multiples instead. A mebibyte is 220 = 1,048,576 bytes, which is 48,576 more than a megabyte. If a figure comes from a disk or memory specification, check which of the two it means before converting it to millions.

A million is the same everywhere. A billion is not.

This is the part that catches people out, and it is worth understanding before you trust any converted figure that crossed a border. A million is 106 in every numbering system in use — short scale, long scale, it does not matter. It is one of the few large number words that is genuinely unambiguous.

One rung up the ladder, that agreement collapses. The change is documented precisely: in a written answer on 20 December 1974, Prime Minister Harold Wilson was asked to confirm that ministers would use “billion” in its older British sense of a million million. He declined, replying that the word “is now used internationally to mean 1,000 million and it would be confusing if British Ministers were to use it in any other sense” (Hansard, written answers, 20 December 1974). It is worth being accurate about what happened there: no law was passed and no definition was decreed. A government simply confirmed which convention its own figures would follow, and general British usage had already been drifting that way. Documents written in the UK before the mid-1970s may still use the older sense, which is exactly why old sources need checking rather than assuming.

Lakh and crore: the Indian numbering system

A large share of English-language searches for converting a number to millions come from India, where the everyday units are not thousands and millions at all. The Indian system names lakh at 105 and crore at 107, which sit either side of a million rather than lining up with it. The conversions are exact:

  • 1 lakh = 100,000 = 0.1 million
  • 1 million = 10 lakh
  • 1 crore = 10,000,000 = 10 million, exactly
  • 1 crore = 100 lakh, and 1 billion = 100 crore

Because a crore is exactly ten million, converting between the two is the easiest step in the whole system: multiply crore by ten to get millions, divide millions by ten to get crore. The awkward one is lakh, which is a factor of ten below a million, so a figure in lakh always looks ten times larger than the equivalent in millions.

The second difference is how the digits are punctuated, and it is not a cosmetic detail — it changes what the number looks like entirely. Western grouping puts a separator every three digits. Indian grouping puts the first separator after three digits and then one every two. So 1,234,567 is written 12,34,567, one lakh is 1,00,000, and one crore is 1,00,00,000. Financial statements. Company accounts are almost never printed in full digits.
