What is Lorem Ipsum?
Lorem Ipsum is dummy text used by designers, typesetters and developers to fill a layout before the real copy exists. It is not random gibberish: it is scrambled, near-Latin text with a realistic distribution of short and long words, so a block of it looks convincingly like real paragraphs without carrying any meaning that would distract from the design.
Despite looking like nonsense, it has roots in classical literature. The text comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, a treatise on ethics written by Cicero in 45 BC. The familiar opening — "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…" — is a corruption of "dolorem ipsum" ("pain itself"). It has been the printing industry's standard filler since the 1500s, when an unknown printer scrambled a galley of type to make a specimen book.

One thing to remember
Lorem Ipsum is for drafts, not for production. On a live, indexable page it is low-value placeholder content that helps neither your visitors nor your search ranking, and it looks unfinished. Always replace it with real copy before you launch, and make sure none of it slips through into the final build.
The hidden history: a corrupted passage of Cicero
The Lorem Ipsum text is not random — it is a scrambled fragment of a real work of Roman philosophy. The source is De finibus bonorum et malorum ("On the Ends of Good and Evil"), a treatise the statesman and orator Marcus Tullius Cicero wrote in 45 BC examining what the Stoics, Epicureans and other schools considered the highest good. The familiar opening comes from sections 1.10.32–33, where the original Latin reads "Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit…" — roughly, "Nor is there anyone who loves pain itself because it is pain." The placeholder's famous first two words, "Lorem ipsum", are simply what survives when the front of dolorem ipsum ("pain itself") is chopped off and the words are jumbled.
How a Latin professor solved the mystery
For decades nobody knew where the dummy text actually came from. The puzzle was finally cracked by Richard McClintock, a Latin scholar at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, sometime before 1982. His clue was a single, very unusual word: consectetur, which appears in the Lorem Ipsum opening but is vanishingly rare in classical Latin. Tracing that word through the literature led him straight to Cicero's De finibus. McClintock's detective work is the reason we can attribute the text at all — and he later added an important correction: the popular claim that Lorem Ipsum has been used "since the 1500s" was, he admitted, a guess for which there is no actual evidence.
How Lorem Ipsum really spread: Letraset and PageMaker
The documented history is more recent, and more interesting, than the 1500s legend. Lorem Ipsum entered widespread use in the late 1960s, when the British company Letraset printed it on the dry-transfer lettering sheets that designers rubbed onto layouts by hand, giving them a ready block of "type" to fill a mock-up. It made the leap into the digital age in the mid-1980s, when Aldus bundled it as the sample text in its ground-breaking desktop-publishing program PageMaker. From there it was copied into word processors, design tools and eventually thousands of websites and content-management systems — which is how a mangled line of first-century Roman ethics became the most recognisable filler text in the world.
What the standard passage means
The block most generators reach for continues "…sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation…". Because the words have been cut and reshuffled, it no longer parses as coherent Latin — that is deliberate. The underlying Ciceronian argument, however, is a serious one: in this part of De finibus Cicero is rebutting the Epicurean idea that pleasure is the highest good, explaining that no sensible person seeks pain "for its own sake" but may rightly endure hardship to reach a greater reward. There is a pleasing irony in the fact that the world's most-used meaningless text is carved out of a 2,000-year-old debate about meaning, pleasure and the good life.
"Greeking": why fake text exists at all
Designers call the practice of standing in fake text for real copy greeking (as in "it's all Greek to me"). The purpose is psychological as much as practical. When a layout contains real, readable words, everyone who looks at it — clients, colleagues, stakeholders — starts reading and reacting to those words, and the conversation drifts away from the thing being reviewed: the typography, the spacing, the hierarchy, the balance of the page. Meaningless text keeps the eye on the design. It is the visual equivalent of a tailor pinning a plain muslin shell before cutting the real cloth.
Why scrambled Latin works so well
Lorem Ipsum is not just any nonsense; it has properties that make it unusually good filler. Its letter distribution and word lengths are close to those of normal Western European text, so a paragraph of it has a realistic visual "colour" and texture — the average darkness a block of type creates when you look at the page from a distance. It uses the Latin alphabet without accents, so it renders in virtually any typeface. And because it carries no meaning and references nothing — no brand, no real person, no topic — it never accidentally implies content the design has not committed to. A string of "asdf asdf" or repeated "test test" simply would not give the same convincing impression of real paragraphs.
How much placeholder text do you need?
A good habit when greeking is to match the amount of dummy text to the real content you expect, not to whatever happens to fill the box. If a heading will hold about eight words, generate about eight, not a paragraph. If a description field will run two or three sentences, use two or three. Typographers also watch the measure — the number of characters per line — and generally aim for roughly 45 to 75 characters (including spaces) for comfortable reading of body text; filling a column with Lorem Ipsum is a quick way to check that your chosen width and font size land in that range before any real words exist. Generating the right quantity up front means fewer surprises when the genuine copy, which is rarely so tidy, finally drops in.
When to use it — and the case against it
Placeholder text is genuinely useful early in a project: roughing out a template before the copy exists, pressure-testing how a component behaves when its text box is full, or reviewing pure layout with a client. But many designers now argue for content-first design — building with real or realistic copy from the start — because Lorem Ipsum can hide problems. Real headlines are rarely a tidy five words; real product names are sometimes awkwardly long; real paragraphs vary far more than the smooth, even blocks Lorem Ipsum produces. A layout that looks perfect filled with Latin can fall apart the moment genuine, uneven content arrives. A sensible compromise is to use placeholder text only where you must, and to stress-test with deliberately long and short strings so the design survives the real world.
Variations and modern alternatives
Classic Lorem Ipsum has spawned a whole genre of themed "ipsum" generators that swap the Latin for playful vocabularies — food, film quotes, corporate jargon and the like. These are fun and can match a project's tone, but they reintroduce the very thing Lorem Ipsum avoids: readable words that pull attention back to the text. For serious layout work the neutral, meaningless original is usually the safer choice. There are also two cases where Latin filler is the wrong tool entirely. When you are designing for a non-English audience, fill the layout with text in the target language, because word lengths, line breaks and character sets differ enough to change how a design wraps. And when you are testing internationalisation, pseudolocalization — replacing text with accented, expanded, bracketed versions of the real strings — surfaces truncation and encoding bugs that smooth Latin never would.
Don't let it reach production
The cardinal sin is shipping Lorem Ipsum to a live site. It happens more often than you would think — stray "Lorem ipsum" has appeared on launched marketing pages, printed packaging and even app-store listings. On an indexable web page it is worse than embarrassing: it is empty, irrelevant content that offers nothing to a reader and nothing to a search engine assessing whether the page is helpful. Before any launch, search your codebase and CMS for the word "lorem" and confirm every instance has been replaced with real copy. Treat placeholder text the way you treat a draft watermark — a tool for the workshop that must never escape into the finished product.
Is Lorem Ipsum free to use?
Yes. Lorem Ipsum carries no copyright and no licensing requirement — it is meaningless, scrambled text derived from a work written over two thousand years ago, and the placeholder form itself is not a protected creative work. You can use it freely in commercial designs, client mock-ups, templates and products with no attribution. That, along with its long history and instant recognisability to other designers, is part of why it has never been displaced by an alternative.
Lorem Ipsum and accessibility testing
Placeholder text has one accessibility caveat worth flagging. A screen reader will dutifully try to pronounce "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet", producing a stream of meaningless sound for anyone using assistive technology to review the page — so never leave it in content that real users, including those who rely on screen readers, will encounter. More positively, filling a layout with realistic-length text is a useful way to check that headings, landmarks and reading order still make sense when the boxes are full, and that nothing overlaps or truncates. Just remember that genuine copy, tested with a real screen reader, is the only way to be sure the finished page reads well.
