How the conversion works

The number is split into groups of digits and each group is named by its place value. The International system groups in threes — thousand, million, billion, trillion. The Indian system names the last three digits, then groups the rest in twos — thousand, lakh, crore, arab, kharab, neel.

For the amount in words, the two digits after the decimal point become the subunit — paise for rupees, cents for dollars and euros, pence for pounds — and the result ends in "Only" in the standard cheque style. The ordinal form takes the whole-number part and turns the final word into its ranked form (three → third, twenty → twentieth, one hundred → one hundredth). The whole-number part is handled with exact big-integer maths, so nothing is rounded or approximated.

The Indian numbering system: lakh, crore and beyond

Across India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Myanmar — a combined population well over a billion and a half people — large numbers are named with the lakh and crore system rather than millions and billions. The place values rise in a regular pattern: a thousand is 1,000; a lakh is 1,00,000 (one hundred thousand); a crore is 1,00,00,000 (ten million); an arab is one hundred crore (a billion); a kharab is one hundred arab; and the names continue with neel, padma and shankh. The system has deep roots in ancient Indian mathematics, where Sanskrit texts named place values far into the trillions and beyond — the same intellectual tradition that gave the world decimal place-value notation and the numeral for zero.

Its most distinctive feature is the grouping. Where the international system separates digits in blocks of three, the Indian system separates the last three digits and then every two digits after that. So ten million is written 1,00,00,000 (one crore) in India but 10,000,000 internationally, and you will see prices and salaries quoted as "₹1.5 crore" or "₹40 lakh" rather than in millions. Short scale vs long scale: the "billion" problem

Even within the Western system the same word has historically meant different things. Under the modern short scale — used in the United States and, since 1974, in official British usage — a billion is 1,000,000,000 (109), and each higher name multiplies by a thousand: trillion is 1012, quadrillion 1015. Under the older long scale, still used in much of continental Europe, a billion means a million million (1012), and what English calls a billion is a "milliard". This is why older British texts and many European languages can make "billion" ambiguous. This tool's International setting uses the modern short scale that dominates English today.

Reading large numbers: grouping and separators

Thousands separators are not universal either. English-speaking countries use a comma every three digits (1,234,567); much of Europe uses a point or a space (1.234.567 or 1 234 567), reserving the comma for the decimal point; and India uses its own lakh-crore grouping (12,34,567). Because the symbols swap roles between locales, the safest way to communicate a number without ambiguity is to spell it out in words — which is exactly what "amount in words" achieves on a cheque or contract. Writing amounts in words on a cheque: why it matters

Writing an amount twice — once in figures and once in words — is not a quaint formality; it is a fraud-prevention measure that long predates computers. Figures are easy to alter: a "1" becomes a "7", or a zero is appended to turn 100 into 1,000. The words are far harder to tamper with, and if the figures and the words on a cheque disagree, banking practice in many countries — and longstanding rules in negotiable-instruments law — holds that the amount in words generally prevails. That is also why the words line ends with "Only": it seals the amount so nothing can be added after it. Spelling out numbers in formal writing

Beyond cheques, style guides give rules for when to write a number as a word rather than a figure. The Chicago Manual of Style spells out whole numbers from zero through one hundred (and round multiples like two hundred or three thousand); journalistic style, following the AP Stylebook, generally spells out one through nine and uses figures for 10 and above. Two rules are nearly universal: hyphenate compound numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine (so "forty-two", not "forty two"), and never begin a sentence with a numeral — spell it out or rewrite the sentence. "And", hyphens and regional habits

British and American conventions differ on one small word. British English typically inserts "and" before the tens or units in the hundreds — "one hundred and one" — while American English often drops it: "one hundred one". Neither is wrong; they are regional habits. In strict accounting and on cheques the "and" also separates the main unit from the subunit ("one hundred rupees and fifty paise"). Hyphens, by contrast, are not optional: the compound numbers from 21 to 99 are always hyphenated in careful writing.

Ordinals: first, second, twenty-first

An ordinal number expresses position or rank rather than quantity — first, second, third, twenty-first, one hundredth. Most ordinals simply add -th to the cardinal (four → fourth, ten → tenth), but a handful are irregular (one → first, two → second, three → third, five → fifth, eight → eighth, nine → ninth, twelve → twelfth), and words ending in "-y" change to "-ieth" (twenty → twentieth). Ordinals are everywhere: dates ("the 21st of June"), rankings, anniversaries, legal clauses and floor numbers. The abbreviated forms — 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th — use the last one or two letters of the spelled-out word. This tool gives the full ordinal of whatever whole number you enter.

Decimals, negatives and where words help most

How a number after the decimal point is read depends on context. In plain reading the fractional part is spoken digit by digit after the word "point" — 3.14 is "three point one four", not "three point fourteen" — which this tool reflects in the "In words" output. In a currency amount the first two decimal places instead become the subunit: paise for rupees, cents for dollars and euros, pence for pounds. Negative values are read with a leading "negative". Currencies and their subunits

Most modern currencies divide into 100 subunits, which is why the two digits after the decimal point map so neatly onto "cents" or "paise". The Indian rupee splits into 100 paise; the US dollar and the euro into 100 cents; and the pound sterling into 100 pence (the singular is "penny"). Why number words are so irregular

English number words carry a lot of history. "Eleven" and "twelve" come from Old English roots meaning "one left" and "two left" (over ten), which is why they break the neat "-teen" pattern that begins at thirteen. The teens and tens are themselves compressed forms — "thirteen" is "three-ten", "thirty" is "three-tens" — and the ordinals add their own irregulars (first, second, third). Spelling all of this out correctly by hand is surprisingly fiddly, especially across the boundaries between hundreds, thousands, lakhs and crores, which is exactly the kind of careful, rule-bound work a converter handles reliably every time.

Roman numerals and other systems

Words are not the only non-positional way to write numbers. Roman numerals (I, V, X, L, C, D, M) combine letters additively and subtractively and are still used for clock faces, book chapters, film sequels and monarchs' names — but they have no zero and become unwieldy for large or precise values, which is why the decimal place-value system replaced them for calculation.
