How is age calculated?
Age is not simply the difference between two year numbers. A person born on 15 August 2000 is still 25 years old on 14 August 2026 — they turn 26 only on 15 August. The correct algorithm:
- Subtract birth year from the target year → raw year count.
- Compare months: if the target month is earlier than the birth month, subtract 1 year.
- Compare days within the month: if the target day is earlier than the birth day, subtract 1 month and add the number of days in the previous month to account for varying month lengths (28/29/30/31 days).
This handles edge cases like birthdays on 29 February (leap-day babies are typically considered to turn a year older on 28 February or 1 March in non-leap years, depending on jurisdiction — the calculator uses 28 February as the convention).

How your exact age is calculated, step by step
Working out an age looks trivial — surely you just subtract one year from another? — but the moment you want the answer in years, months and days it becomes a place-value subtraction problem, much like subtracting one multi-digit number from another. You line up the two dates in three columns (year, month, day) and subtract column by column, borrowing from the column to the left whenever a result comes out negative.
Take a birth date of 15 August 2000 and a target date of 10 June 2026. Subtracting straight down gives years = 26, months = −2, days = −5 — two of the three columns are negative, so the raw numbers are meaningless on their own. You fix the day column first: because 10 is earlier in the month than 15, you borrow one month and add the length of the borrowed month. The month immediately before June is May, which has 31 days, so days become 31 − 5 = 26 and the month count drops by one to −3. The month column is still negative, so you borrow a year: months become 12 − 3 = 9 and the year count drops from 26 to 25. The verified answer is 25 years, 9 months and 26 days — which the calculator above produces instantly.
The single subtle point that trips up home-grown formulas is which month's length you add when you borrow. You must add the number of days in the month preceding the target date, not a fixed 30 or 31 and not the birth month. Because calendar months are 28, 29, 30 or 31 days long, using an average month length (roughly 30.44 days) or a flat 30-day "banker's month" introduces an error that grows with every borrow. That is why a person born on 31 January is exactly one month old not on 31 February (which does not exist) but on 28 February in a common year — and the only reliable way to know that is to ask the calendar how long February actually was.
There is also a quieter ambiguity: inclusive versus exclusive counting. When you ask "how many days old am I," do you count the day of birth itself? The near-universal convention — and the one this tool uses — is exclusive of the birth day and inclusive of the current day, so a baby is zero days old on the day it is born and one day old the following day. Some legal and billing systems count inclusively (both endpoints), which shifts every total by one. Whenever two age tools disagree by exactly one day, an inclusive-versus-exclusive mismatch is almost always the cause.
Leap years and the February 29 problem
Every claim an age calculator makes rests on knowing exactly which years contain a 29 February. The Gregorian rule is a chain of three nested tests:
- A year divisible by 4 is a leap year…
- …except a year divisible by 100, which is not…
- …unless it is also divisible by 400, which is.
This is why 1700, 1800 and 1900 were common years (divisible by 100 but not 400) while 1600 and 2000 were leap years (divisible by 400). The next century year to break the every-four rule will be 2100, which will not be a leap year. The machinery exists to keep the calendar aligned with the Earth's orbit: the tropical year is about 365.2422 days long, the old Julian calendar assumed exactly 365.25, and the Gregorian average of 365.2425 days closes almost all of that gap — drifting only about one day every 3,000 years.

People born on 29 February are nicknamed "leaplings" or leap-year babies, and they are genuinely rare: a leap day occurs on just one of every 1,461 days (4 × 365 + 1), so the odds of a 29 February birthday are roughly 1 in 1,461, about four times rarer than any other date. In the three years out of four with no 29 February, jurisdictions actually disagree on when a leapling legally grows a year older. England & Wales and Hong Kong treat the legal anniversary as 1 March, whereas Taiwan's civil code places it on 28 February. The calculator above uses the 28 February convention, but for anything with a hard legal deadline — eligibility, licensing, or a contract date — check the rule that applies where you live.
How calendar reforms quietly changed the math
Once a birth or historical date reaches back a few centuries, age arithmetic collides with the fact that the calendar itself was rewritten. The Julian calendar, in use since 45 BC, ran slightly too long, and by the 1500s its spring equinox had drifted about ten days out of place. In February 1582 Pope Gregory XIII issued a papal bull introducing the reformed calendar that now bears his name, and that October the correction was applied: in the countries that adopted it immediately, Thursday 4 October 1582 was followed directly by Friday 15 October 1582, deleting ten dates that never existed.
Protestant and Orthodox countries refused to follow a papal decree, so Europe spent more than a century split across two calendars. Great Britain and its colonies — including what is now the United States — held out until 1752. Under the Calendar (New Style) Act 1750, by then eleven days out of step, Wednesday 2 September 1752 was followed by Thursday 14 September 1752. The same Act moved the start of the legal year from 25 March to 1 January; a fossil of the adjustment survives in the United Kingdom, whose tax year still begins on 6 April rather than the old quarter-day of 25 March. Other countries held out far longer still — Russia did not switch until 1918, when, by then thirteen days adrift, 31 January 1918 was followed by 14 February 1918 under a Soviet decree.

The practical takeaway for any age tool: software (including the JavaScript date engine behind this page) uses the proleptic Gregorian calendar, meaning it projects today's rules backward over dates that were actually recorded in the Julian calendar. For genealogy and history that reach before a country's switch-over, a computed weekday or day-count can differ from the date written in an old parish register or gravestone. For any modern date the results are exact.
How the world counts age differently
The "completed years" method this calculator uses — you are zero at birth and tick over a year on each birthday — is the international standard, but it is not the only one humans have used. In traditional East Asian age reckoning, a newborn is considered one year old at birth (counting the time in the womb as the first year) and everyone gains a year together at the New Year rather than on their personal birthday. Under that system a baby born on the last day before the New Year can be reckoned "two years old" within a day or two of being born. Ages counted this way run one to two years higher than the international count.
South Korea was the last country to use such "Korean age" in everyday life, alongside the international system and a third counting-age variant — a confusing overlap that caused real disputes over contracts, school entry and pensions. On 28 June 2023, a new law took effect standardising international age for all legal and administrative purposes, a change backed by more than 80% of the public in government polling. Overnight, on paper, much of the country became a year or two younger. The reform is a useful reminder that "how old are you" has a precise answer only once you have agreed on the system — which is exactly what a calculator built on completed Gregorian years pins down.
Biological age, gestational age and other ways to measure a life
The number this tool returns is your chronological age: the calendar time elapsed since you were born. It is deliberately objective, which is why every legal and administrative system relies on it. But it is only one of several "ages" used in different fields:
- Biological age estimates how old your body functions — based on markers such as cardiovascular health, cell condition and increasingly "epigenetic clocks." Two people with the same birthday can have biological ages years apart; unlike chronological age it can, in principle, move in either direction with lifestyle.
- Gestational age measures development before birth, counted in weeks from the first day of the last menstrual period; a full-term pregnancy is about 40 weeks. After delivery this becomes postnatal (chronological) age — simply time since birth.
- Corrected age is used for babies born prematurely: you subtract the number of weeks the baby arrived before 40 weeks from its chronological age, so growth and developmental milestones are judged against where the child would be if carried to term. Clinicians typically apply it until about 24 months.
- Mental and social age describe cognitive development and life-stage milestones rather than calendar time, and a half-birthday (the date exactly six months from a birthday) is an informal marker some families and schools use to split the year.
Where an age calculator is actually used
Pinning down an exact age — not just a rounded year — matters across a surprising range of everyday and professional contexts:
- Legal and eligibility checks. The age of majority is 18 in most of the world, but it varies (for example, certain U.S. states set it at 19 or 21, and Japan lowered it from 20 to 18 in 2022). Voting, driving, marriage and contract rights each hinge on whether someone has reached a threshold on a specific date, which is precisely what the "as of" field above answers.
- Medicine and pediatrics. Drug dosing for children is frequently weight- and age-banded, and vaccination schedules and developmental screening are timed to exact age in weeks or months — where being off by a few days can move a child into a different band.
- Retirement and pension planning. Eligibility for state pensions and retirement accounts is keyed to reaching a precise age, so knowing the exact date you cross a milestone (and how many days remain) drives real financial timing.
- Insurance. Life-insurance underwriting often uses "age nearest birthday" or "age last birthday," and an applicant's premium band can change literally overnight — so the exact age on the policy date is what is priced.
- Astrology and zodiac. Both the Western zodiac (sun sign by birth date) and the Chinese zodiac (animal by birth year) depend on the calendar position of a birth, and milestone-birthday planning is one of the most common everyday reasons people reach for an age calculator at all.
Common age-calculation mistakes
- Subtracting years only. 2026 − 2000 = 26 is wrong for anyone whose birthday this year has not yet passed — they are still 25. The month and day must always be compared, not just the year.
- Ignoring varying month lengths. Assuming every month is 30 days, or always borrowing 31, slowly accumulates error. The correct length is whatever the calendar actually assigns to the month you borrow from.
- Forgetting leap years. Estimating total days as years × 365 undercounts by one day for every leap year crossed — over a long life that is more than a fortnight.
- Inclusive vs exclusive day counts. Counting both the birth day and today (instead of one or the other) shifts every total by one day; agree on the convention before comparing two results.
- Time-zone and daylight-saving drift. Storing a birthday as a UTC timestamp and reading it back in a different time zone can roll the date forward or backward a day. This tool deliberately parses dates at local midnight to avoid that drift.
- Mishandling the leap-day birthday. Software that does not decide on a 28 February or 1 March rule for leaplings can produce an off-by-one age in common years.

Exact age is calculated in three steps. First, subtract the birth year from the target year to get a raw year count. Then subtract birth month from target month; if the target day is earlier in the month than the birth day, borrow one month and add the number of days in the previous month to the day difference. Interestingly, 1 billion seconds equals approximately 31.7 years, so you pass the 1-billion-second mark a little over 31 and a half years after your birth.
What day of the week was I born on?
The calculator automatically determines your day of birth from your date of birth using JavaScript's Date API, which applies the proleptic Gregorian calendar. For dates before 15 October 1582 (when the Gregorian calendar was adopted) the result is extrapolated and may differ from historical Julian-calendar records. For modern dates (after 1582) the day-of-week result is reliable.
How do I calculate age for a future or past date?
Use the "As of" date field. By default it is set to today, but you can change it to any past or future date. This lets you answer questions like "How old will I be on my wedding date?", "How old was my grandfather when he emigrated in 1965?", or "How old will I be when I retire in 2045?" The calculator uses the exact same years/months/days algorithm regardless of whether the "as of" date is in the past or future.
